General Info

Agate is a form of crypto-crystalline quartz called chalcedony. Translucent chalcedony is called agate, opaque stones are called jasper. Agates are found in large deposits throughout the world and frequently have bright beautiful colors and patterns. They are usually cut into cabochons and most varieties are relatively inexpensive.

Color and pattern are important characteristics in determining an agates value. In most cases, the value of the stone will be substantially less than the value of the mounting.

Treatments
Agate is regularly dyed to generate different colors and patterns. The stone called black onyx, for example is almost always dyed agate.

Care Instructions :

Agate itself is fairly durable but it is frequently set into mountings that are made of silver, which is fairly soft. Agates can be scratched by other stones in your jewelry box so they should be stored separately from other items. Use a soft brush with soap and water to clean. Avoid harsh chemicals. Be particularly careful with designs that involve silver antiquing because your cleaning can lighten up this coloration.
