General Info

Carnelian is the translucent red/orange form of crypto-crystalline quartz called chalcedony. It is a form of Agate. Carnelians are found in large deposits throughout the world and frequently have bright beautiful colors and patterns. They are usually cut into cabochons and most varieties are relatively inexpensive. It is often also used as a carving material.

Color is the important characteristic in determining a carnelians value. In most cases, the value of the stone will be substantially less than the value of the mounting.

Treatments
Carnelian is regularly dyed to generate the color. This treatment is permanent and almost always applied.

Care Instructions :

Carnelian itself is fairly durable but it is frequently set into mountings that are made of silver, which is fairly soft. Carnelian can be scratched by other stones in your jewelry box so they should be stored separately from other items. Use a soft brush with soap and water to clean. Avoid harsh chemicals. Be particularly careful with designs that involve silver antiquing because your cleaning can lighten up this coloration.
