General Info

Pearls are one of the prized gemstones of the ancient world and represent a specialty unto themselves in modern gemology. Most pearls, and all pearls that we sell, are cultured. This means that they are produced by a true mollusk but that there was human intervention involved in creating the pearl.

There are several primary types of pearls: Natural, cultured saltwater, cultured fresh water, cultured south seas, and black.

Value is determined by size, type, blemishes, color, and a variety of other characteristics that are too numerous to list here. Pearls can range from a few dollars per strand to hundreds of thousands depending on quality.

Treatments

Pearls are regularly dyed and bleached both before and after nucleation. The treatments are generally permanent but have a significant affect on value.

Care Instructions :

Pearls are soft and easily damaged. Special care should be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals because they can change the color of the pearls. Even certain perfumes and cosmetics can cause damage. Clean pearls with a soft brush, soap and water. Store them in a bag separately from other jewelry because they are easily scratched by the stones found in other pieces.

Gemological Properties:

Most imitation pearls have a smooth feel when rubbed against the teeth. X-ray examination is required to separate natural from cultured pearls.
