Ruby is the red form of the mineral corundum and is found in deposits throughout the world. There are famous ruby deposits in Myanmar, Thailand, Brazil, Madagascar and many other locations.
Color and size are the primary value characteristics of rubies. In some cases, origin also plays a part because the output from certain mines are prized above others. The value of rubies can vary hugely based on these variables. Inexpensive ruby can be bought for as little as $5/pound and can go up to $500,000/ct.
Treatments
Since time immemorial rubies have been treated to enhance the beauty of the stones. Most rubies seen on the market today have been subjected to high temperatures using process that are said to have originated in Sri Lanka some 2,000 years ago.
Rubies are also frequently treated with modern techniques that infuse the surface with minerals that enhance the colors. This process, called ‘diffusion' treatment is becoming increasingly popular and it produces stones with excellent color at a substantial discount. We will disclose all diffusion treatments on any of our stones.
Ruby is generally accepted as the birthstone for September.
Care Instructions :
