Sapphire is the non-red form of the mineral corundum and is found in deposits throughout the world. Blue sapphire is the most popular gemstone in America although sapphire is available in all colors except red. The reason is simple – red corundum is called ruby!
Color and size are the primary value characteristics of sapphire. In some cases, origin also play a part because the output from certain mines are prized above others.
Treatments
Since time immemorial sapphires have been treated to enhance the beauty of the stones. Most sapphires seen on the market today have been subjected to high temperatures using process that are said to have originated in Sri Lanka some 2,000 years ago.
Sapphires are also frequently treated with modern techniques that infuse the surface with minerals that enhance the colors. This process, called ‘diffusion' treatment is becoming increasingly popular and it produces stones with excellent color at a substantial discount. We will disclose all diffusion treatments on any of our stones.
Sapphire is generally accepted as the birthstone for September.
Care Instructions :
Sapphires are extremely durable and will hold up well to normal wear. No special care is required.
